WSSU Rams To Host Virginia State Trojans In CIAA Opener

WINSTON-SALEM, NC -- The Winston-Salem State University men's basketball team will kick off CIAA Conference play when they host Virginia State University, Thursday, January 5, at 7:30 PM in the CE Gaines Center as part of a doubleheader of basketball action.

The Rams' men's basketball team will enter the game versus Virginia State with a 7-2 overall record.  The Rams are coming off of back to back losses in the Tampa Classic to Eckerd College and to Tampa University.

This will also be WSSU's first home game since December 3rd, when the Rams defeated Queens University of Charlotte, 70-60.

WSSU is the defending Southern Division Champion from last season, where they finished 19-8 overaal and 12-5 in CIAA conference play.

Winston-Salem State is led in scoring by Lamar Monger (Guard, Senior, 6-0, 185, Ahoskie, N.C./Hertford County H.S.), who is averaging a robust 17.2 points per game and 2.7 rebounds and Justin Glover (Guard, Junior, 6-3, 190, Siler City, N.C./Davidson County CC) is second on the team averaging 14.0 points and 4.0 rebounds.

Freshman WyKevin Bazemore (Forward, Freshman, 6-4, 185, Kelford, N.C./Bertie High School), who picked up his first collegiate start versus Tampa, is third on the team in points scored per game at 7.1, he is also pulling down a team high 5.6 rebounds per game.  Stephon Platt is averaging 7.0 points and 4.3 rebounds, and Marcus Wells is averaging 6.8 points and 4.0 rebounds per game.  Wells is also leading the team with 4.9 assists per game and 29 steals through nine games.

The Trojans of Virginia State enter the contest at 1-7 overall.  Their lone win was against Glenville State (Nov. 26), a 58-57 overtime win.  They are led in scoring by Ibn Rassoull who is averaging 16.0 points and 4.9 rebounds, while Kenny Mitchell is averaging 14.0 points and a team high 6.0 rebounds per game.

Winston-Salem State defeated the Trojans 67-56 in Petersburg, Va. on January 6, 2011.
