Box Score WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State University Rams (12-6, 9-1 CIAA) clicked on all cylinders when the team took a dominating three-set win over the Saint Augustine's Falcons (8-11, 4-6 CIAA), Monday evening. The shorthanded Rams took the win in an impressive fashion as they controlled every aspect of the match to take the win, 25-11, 25-21, and 25-13.
As a team, the Rams had a great overall match as they combined some stellar defense with some strong offense. As a team, the Rams allowed just 24 kills to the Lady Falcons while totaling 36 kills of their own. The Rams also benefitted from a stellar service game as they totaled seven service aces in the match. WSSU senior right side hitter Olivia Owens led the way in the match with 10 kills and four total blocks (one solo). Sophomore outside hitter Sydney Holland added a great effort as well with nine kills and nine digs in the match as well. Junior middle blocker Jocelyn Mills continued her strong play this season with seven kills and five total blocks (none solo).
The Rams jumped out to control all three sets of the match early and never looked back. The team's most impressive performance came in the opening set when the team jumped out to a 17-5 lead. The effort included scoring nine unanswered points against the Lady Falcons at one point. After pushing their lead to as many as 13 points, 21-8, the team cruised to the 25-11 opening set victory. The second set was the hardest for the Rams as they held off the Falcons to take the win. The Rams once again jumped out early with an 11-4 run to open the set. From there, the Rams found themselves fending off the Lady Falcons as they allowed a 11-5 run by the Lady Falcons to hold on to a one-point lead, 16-15. But the Rams soon kicked things into gear when four unanswered points to go ahead 20-15. Once in control, the Rams never looked back as they kept their four point cushion with a 24-20 lead before closing the set on an SAU attack error. After holding off the Lady Falcons, the Rams rolled to the win behind a dominating third set. The Rams opened the set with an 8-1 run to take control. After going ahead 15-7, the Rams outscored the Lady Falcons, 10-5 to close out the match. The run included six SAU attack errors.
With the win, the Rams improve to 12-6 overall and 9-1 in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) play, and 6-1 the CIAA Southern Division. The Rams will return to action tomorrow when the team hosts the Concord (W.Va.) Mountain Lions in a non-conference match tomorrow at 7:00 p.m.
