Box Score WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Winston-Salem State Rams let a late lead slip away, and #13 UNCP Pembroke hit a late shot to send the game into overtime, and hit another late shot to win the game 89-88 over the home team Tuesday night at the CE Gaines Center.
It was a back and forth first half with neither team able to pull away and distance themselves from the other. UNC Pembroke went in to the locker room leading the WSSU Rams 37-36 at the break.
The second half was a carbon copy of the first, with both team scrapping hard to try to find any advantage.
Winston-Salem State ramped up its defensive effort and seemed to be gaining traction, and with 6.5 seconds remaining, CJ Ford knocked down two big free throws to give WSSU a 81-78 lead.
But point guard Quamain Rose found an opening on the right wing and made a 3-pointer with .5 seconds remaining to send the game into overtime.
WSSU seemed to be in control during the overtime period, but the Braves had an answer each time the Rams surged ahead.
Carlos Rankins hit a late basket with 13 seconds left to give WSSU a 88-87 lead, but once again the Braves threw a dagger, and with 3.5 seconds left, UNCP's Keysheen Hinton nailed a jumped from the left wing to give the Braves the 89-88 overtime win.
CJ Ford led the Rams in scoring, with 17 points, to go with two rebounds, two steals, one assist and one blocked shot. Rayvon Harris added 14points and four rebounds and Carlos Rankins chipped in with 13 points, two rebounds, one assist and one steal. Demone Harrison and TJ Wilson added nine points each, while Keith Armstrong finished with nine points and seven rebounds. William Crandell scored seven points and pulled down four rebounds, and Jerome Simmons added six points, and seven rebounds.
UNC Pembroke was led by Quamain Rose, who scored a game high 24 points with five steals, three assists and three rebounds. Alex Bradley added 14 points and Jonathan Kistner dropped in 12 points and six rebounds. Tyler Kordenbrock chipped in 10 points to go with his eight rebounds.
Winston-Salem State will host Elizabeth City State at 4:00pm in a non-conference battle in the CE Gaines Center.
