Lady Rams Break Out for 12-1 Win at Clark Atlanta

ATLANTA, GA – After three weeks off, the Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (2-7) returned to action in a big way when they took a dominating 12-1 win at Clark-Atlanta, Sunday afternoon. The time off didn't slow down the Lady Rams' offense as the team scored a season-high 12 runs in the game while allowing just one run to the Lady Panthers.

The Lady Rams put on a great performance at the plate 12 runs scored on 11 hits. In addition to the strong hitting performance, the Lady Rams also benefitted from four Clark Atlanta fielding errors as nine of the WSSU runs were earned with three unearned runs. As a team, the Lady Rams allowed just one run and five hits to the Lady Panthers. Sophomore third base Jada Johnson powered the Lady Rams to the win with a two-for-four performance at the plate with two RBI, a run scored, and a home run. Sophomore second base Chyna Riley added a pair of runs scored with two hits as well. Senior shortstop Katrina Bartlett added two hits with two runs scored and an RBI.

The Lady Rams scored in bunches in the win with all 12 runs coming in three separate innings. The Lady Rams struck early with three first inning runs when senior shortstop Katrina Bartlett hit an RBI single that scored sophomore outfielder Chyna Riley and sophomore Allison Woodbury added a two-RBI single that drove in Bartlett and senior designated player Monet Daly. Sophomore pitcher Mercedes Hargett sparked a three-run third inning for the Lady Rams when she hit an RBI groundout  that drove in Bartlett and senior outfielder Kiah Ruffin and Daly both scored on a Clark-Atlanta fielding error. In the sixth inning, the Lady Rams broke things open with six runs. Sophomore third base Jada Johnson started things off with a solo home run. Daly added an RBI single as well. Woodbury hit her second RBI single of the day that scored Daly while Hargett scored on a CAU passed ball. Freshman Marissal Carrillo added an RBI single while Johnson capped her day with another RBI single.

Hargett (2-4) took the pitching win for the Lady Rams, going all six innings with just five hits allowed and nine strikeouts. She also allowed just one earned run in the game.
