Lady Rams Take Hard-Fought 5-4 Loss at Johnson C. Smith

CHARLOTTE, NC – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (6-7, 6-6 CIAA) gave it their all, but the team fell just short in a 5-4 loss at Johnson C. Smith (10-9, 9-4 CIAA), Saturday afternoon. Though the loss had little effect on the current Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) standings, there was no shortage of effort for the Lady Rams in the close loss.

After taking a 6-3 loss to the Golden Bulls earlier this season, the Lady Rams gave an improved effort, Saturday, but still came up just short in the loss.

The Lady Rams looked good early in the match with two of three wins in doubles play. The Lady Rams kicked things off with an 8-2 win at #2 doubles before closing things out with an 8-4 win at #1 doubles. After a loss at #3 doubles, the Lady Rams headed into singles play with a 2-1 lead in the match.

Things got tough for the Lady Rams in singles play with the team took four losses to end the day with the loss. Freshman Aja Grant took an impressive 6-0, 6-2 win at #4 singles while senior Devan Corpening added a 6-1, 6-4 win at #1 singles. However, the Lady Rams took losses at #2, #3, #5, and #6 singles to end the day with the loss.

With the loss, the Lady Rams fall to 6-7 on the season and 6-6 in CIAA play. The team also falls to 4-5 in the CIAA Southern Division and remains in third place in the division. The Lady Rams will close out the regular season with a Monday afternoon match against the Elizabeth City State Lady Vikings.
