Box Score WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State University Rams (6-8, 2-3 CIAA) Rams women's basketball team clicked on all cylinders when the team took a dominating 61-35 win over the Bowie State Lady Bulldogs (9-7, 2-4 CIAA), Wednesday evening. The Rams took the win in dominating fashion as the controlled both ends of the court in the victory.
While the Rams' offensive effort was impressive in the game, it was the team's defensive effort that stole the show. As a team, the Rams shot a solid 36.7% from the floor while holding the Lady Bulldogs to shooting just 23.3% from the floor. WSSU junior center Taylor Boyd led the way for the Rams with 13 points and five rebounds in the game while sophomore center Kandace Tate added 11 points. Junior forward Jasmine Carter led the Rams' rebounding effort with a career-high 14 rebounds in the game. The team also controlled the paint with five total team blocks in the game.
The Rams opened the game with a scorching hot effort with a dominating first half. After jumping out to a 17-0 lead and holding the Lady Bulldogs scoreless for the first six minutes of the game. From there, the team continued to dominate the game as a Boyd free throw with 1:30 left in the quarter left the Rams with a 22-4 lead that the team carried over into the second quarter. The Rams' lead went to 20 points, 26-6 after a free throw from sophomore forward Briana Arnold with 8:06 left in the second quarter. The WSSU lead would increase to as many as 28 points, 34-8 after a Tate lay-up at the 2:29 mark. From there, the Rams cruised to the 34-11 halftime lead.
Things kept going for the Rams with a strong second half. The Rams would have to hold off the Lady Bulldogs who made a solid second half run as the WSSU lead was cut down to 20 points as the Rams held a 37-17 lead with 4:30 left in the quarter. But the Rams would not let up as they took a 45-24 lead into the fourth quarter. Bowie State would make one last push, but the Rams would answer back in the fourth quarter. A Carter jumper would keep the WSSU lead to 25 points, 57-32 with 3:27 left to play. After a jumper from freshman guard Brionna Pate gave the Rams their largest lead of the game, 61-35, with 1:54 left to play, the Rams cruised for the remainder of the game and took home the victory.
With the win, the Rams post back-to-back victories. The Rams will remain at home for their next action as they team will host the Saint Augustine's Lady Falcons, Saturday afternoon.
