WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (2-5, 2-3 CIAA) got a key win, Tuesday afternoon when the team battled its way to a 6-3 win over the Johnson C. Smith (1-12, 1-3 CIAA). The win was a key CIAA Southern Division win for the Rams who improve to 2-1 division play and offered a measure of redemption after JCSU ended WSSU's season at the 2015 CIAA Tennis Championship Tournament last April.
The Rams took control of the match early when the team jumped out to a 2-1 lead after doubles play. The WSSU tandem of junior Gabrielle Lindsay and sophomore Aja Grant opened things up with an 8-1 win at #1 doubles, followed by an 8-3 win by senior Devan Corpening and sophomore Alexus Morgan. After an 8-4 loss at #3 doubles, the Rams carried a 2-1 lead into singles play.
With the momentum behind them, the Rams claimed four singles wins to claim the 6-3 team victory. Morgan got things started when she took a 6-0, 6-1 win at #2 singles before Corpening took a 6-4, 6-1 win at #4 singles. Grant rolled to a 6-4, 6-2 win at #3 singles to seal the win and freshman Miranda Legg ended the day with a 6-4, 7-5, 10-8 win at #6 singles to finish the match.
With the win, the Rams improve to 2-15 overall and an impressive 2-1 win in the CIAA Southern Division and move into second place in the division.
The Rams will return to action, Thursday when the team hosts the Livingstone Lady Blue Bears in a 4:00 p.m. match. For more information on Rams tennis, contact the WSSU Office of Athletic Media Relations at (33^) 750-2143 or log on to www.WSSURams.com.
