RICHMOND, VA – The Winston-Salem State Rams (3-6, 3-4 CIAA) couldn't overcome some early struggles when the team took a 5-4 loss to the Bowie State Lady Bulldogs (3-2, 3-2 CIAA), Friday at the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Round Up. The loss ended a two-match winning streak for the Rams and kept the team winless against the CIAA Northern Division.
The Rams showed some much needed heart as they bounced back after a slow start in doubles play with some impressive singles efforts, but the effort was not enough as the team took the loss.
Things got tough early for the Rams when they took three straight doubles losses to open the match. The Rams fell, 9-8, 8-4, and 8-5 in #1, #2, and #3 doubles respectively. With the effort, the team fell behind 3-0.
The Rams were able to bounce back in eight-game pro-set singles play with four points to nearly come back for the win. Sophomore Aja Grant kicked things off with a win by forfeit at #3 singles before senior Devan Corpening took an 8-2 win at #4 singles. Sophomore Alexus Morgan also claimed an 8-3 win while junior Gabrielle Douglas claimed an 8-3 win of her own. However, the Rams took losses at #5 and #6 singles to end the day with the loss.
The Rams will return to action tomorrow when the team returns to action at the 2016 CIAA Tennis Round Up. For more information on Rams tennis, contact the WSSU Office of Athletic Media Relations at (336) 750-2143 or log on to www.WSSURams.com.
