RICHMOND, VA – The Winston-Salem State Rams (5-6, 5-4 CIAA) got a key Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) victory, Sunday when the team took a 6-0 win over the Virginia Union Lady Panthers. The win marked the second of back-to-back shutout wins for the Rams and gave the team a 2-1 record for the weekend round up.
The Rams got things going early when they swept doubles play. The duo of freshman Miranda Legg and sophomore Anye Walker led the way for the Rams when they took an 8-0 win at #3 doubles. The duo of junior Gabrielle Lindsay and sophomore Aja Grant took an 8-1 win at #1 doubles before senior Devan Corpening and sophomore Alexus Morgan got an 8-1 win at #2 doubles to give the Rams a 3-0 lead heading into singles play.
In an effort to avoid inclement weather, the teams played eight-game pro sets in singles play. Corpening, sophomore Zakia Spencer, and Legg all took 8-0 wins to close out the shutout victory for the Rams.
With the win, the Rams improve to 5-6 overall and 5-4 in CIAA play. The team will return to action, Wednesday when they host the Fayetteville State Lady Broncos in a key CIAA Southern Division match.
