FAYETTEVILLE, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (1-4, 1-2 CIAA) got into the win column, Monday afternoon when the team took a dominating 9-0 win over the Fayetteville State Lady Broncos. In addition to taking their first win of the season, the Rams claim their first Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division win of the season to kick things into gear.
The Rams got thing started early when the team swept doubles play. After taking a default win at #3 doubles, the tandem of sophomore Alexus Morgan and senior Devan Corpening took an 8-0 win at #2 doubles. Junior Gabrielle Lindsay and sophomore Aja Grant combined for an 8-1 win at #1 doubles.
After taking a 3-0 lead into singles play, the Rams rounded out the win with six straight singles wins. After taking a default win at #6 singles, the Rams rolled to the win. Senior Devan Corpening took a 6-0, 6-0 win at #4 singles before sophomore Zakia Spencer (6-1, 6-0), sophomore Aja Grant (6-0, 6-1), sophomore Alexus Morgan (6-1, 6-0), and junior Gabrielle Lindsay (6-0, 6-1) rounded out the win.
With the win, the Rams improve to 1-4 on the season, 1-2 in CIAA play and 1-0 in CIAA Southern Division play. The Rams will return to action when the team heads to Raleigh, N.C. to take on the defending CIAA champion Shaw Lady Bears in a 1:00 p.m. match.
