WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Winston-Salem State University women's tennis team battled against Livingstone College on March 14 at Joe White Tennis Center, falling by a final score of 4–3 in a closely contested matchup.
WSSU opened the day in doubles competition looking to secure the early point. The pairing of
Mckinley Battle and
Iyana Nickens fell 5-7 to Livingstone's Castaldo and Cooke.
WSSU picked up two victories on the two doubles courts, from the parings of
Kyla Burns and Makayla Stewart and the parings of
Briana Drew and
Dezirae Black-Macon giving the Rams the early 1–0 advantage heading into singles play.
In singles competition, the Rams fought hard across the lineup.
Briana Drew had a hard fought match but fell 6–1, 6–0 over Johnson.
Iyana Barber also secured a win for WSSU in a tightly contested match, battling to a 7–6 (5) victory after taking the opening set 6–4.
Livingstone ultimately clinched the match with wins on multiple courts, including victories over
Mckinley Battle,
Mikayla Stewart, and
Kyla Burns.
Iyana Nickens was forced to retire during her match after trailing early in the opening set.
Despite the loss, the Rams showed resilience throughout the afternoon, pushing the Blue Bears to the final courts before the match was decided.
