Rams Take 7-2 Loss to Shaw Lady Bears

WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Winston-Salem State Rams (6-7, 6-5 CIAA) saw their three-match streak come to an end, Sunday afternoon when the team took a 7-2 loss to the Shaw Lady Bears (13-2, 11-1 CIAA). The loss gave the Rams just their second Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division loss of the season and snapped a three-match winning streak for the team.

The Rams gave some solid efforts in the match, but the team could not stop the defending CIAA champion Lady Bears. WSSU opened the match with a forfeit win at #3 doubles, but the duo of senior Devan Corpening and sophomore Alexus Morgan took an 8-2 loss at #2 doubles before junior Gabrielle Lindsay and sophomore Aja Grant lost, 8-2 at #1 doubles.

After heading into singles play trailing, 1-2, the Rams looked to bounce back in singles play. After claiming a forfeit win at #6 singles, the Rams took losses in each of the other five singles matches. Freshman Miranda Legg took a 6-0, 6-0 loss at #5 singles before Grant fell, 6-0, 6-1 at #3 singles. Corpening took a 6-1, 6-2 loss at #4 singles before Morgan fell, 6-2, 6-1 at #1 singles. Lindsay rounded out the match with a hard-fought 6-1, 7-5 loss at #2 singles.

With the loss, the Rams fall to 6-7 overall, 6-5 in CIAA play, but the team remains in second place in the CIAA Southern Division with a 4-2 record in division play.
