Rams Take Thrilling 6-3 Win at Johnson C. Smith

CHARLOTTE, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (7-7, 7-5 CIAA) picked up a key Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division win, Wednesday when the team took a 6-3 win at Johnson C. Smith. The win was a big one for the Rams as the team improve to 5-2 in the division.

The Rams got things going early with a pair of thrilling doubles wins. The tandem of junior Gabrielle Lindsay and sophomore Aja Grant left little drama in their 8-1 win at #1 singles. The remaining doubles matches were quite thrilling as they both went into extra sets. Freshman Miranda Legg and sophomore Anya Walker combined for a 9-8 win that featured a 7-4 tiebreak win. The tandem of senior Devan Corpening and sophomore Alexus Morgan came up just short in an equally thrilling match as the took a 9-8 loss at #2 doubles that featured a 7-0 tiebreak loss.

With the 2-1 lead, the Rams carried their momentum into singles play and didn't look back. Lindsay took a 7-6 (7-3), 7-5 win at #1 singles to avenge an earlier singles loss from earlier this season to open things for the Rams. There was far less drama for Morgan who took a 6-1, 6-0 win at #2 singles while Corpening added a 6-3, 6-2 win at #4 singles and Grant added a 6-3, 6-3 win at #3 singles.

With the win, the Rams improve to 7-7 overall and remain solid in second place in the CIAA Southern Division with a 5-2 record. The team will return to action, tomorrow when they head to nearby Salisbury, N.C. to take on the Livingstone Blue Bears to wrap up conference play. The team will play its final home match of the season next Tuesday when they host the Salem Spirit in a hometown rivalry match at 3:00 p.m.
