MOUNT OLIVE, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (2-7) could not overcome a slow start when the team took a 10-2 loss to the Mount Olive Trojans (5-5), Thursday afternoon. The Rams had a solid game with six hits in the loss, but the team could not quite overcome seven runs allowed in the first two innings of play.

As a team, the Rams had a solid game. The team totaled six hits with senior third base Rebecca Demko leading the way, going two-for-two at the plate. Sophomore right fielder Tiarra Delaney went two-for-three with a double and an RBI.

Things got tough early for the Rams when the team allowed five unanswered runs to the Trojans in the first inning. The Rams answered in the second inning when junior outfielder Anna Marino hit an RBI sacrifice bunt that scored freshman designated player Sydnee Brown to fall behind, 5-1. After allowing five unanswered runs to fall behind, 10-1, the team could simply manage an RBI double from Delaney that scored sophomore short stop Jasmine Holloman.

WSSU senior Katherine Zimmer (0-4) took the pitching loss, starting the game and going two innings. She finished with seven runs allowed (four earned) with one walk. Senior Mercedes Hargett came in for two innings and finished with three runs allowed (three earned) on five hits with a strikeout.

The Rams will return to action, tomorrow when the team heads to Myrtle Beach, S.C. to take part in the Snowbird Freezeout Tournament. The Rams will open the tournament against Merrimack College in a 12:00 p.m. game.
