Rams Open CIAA Round-Up with 9-0 Loss to Virginia State

SALISBURY, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (1-3, 0-1 CIAA) struggled in their first Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) match of the season when the team took a 9-0 loss to the Virginia State Trojans (2-1, 1-0 CIAA), Saturday morning in the 2017 CIAA Round-Up. Playing their second straight match without senior Gabrielle Lindsay, the Rams found points hard to come by in the tough loss.

The Rams opened the day with a forfeit loss at #3 doubles followed by an 8-1 loss from freshman Cylah Gaither and junior Zakia Spencer at #2 doubles. The tandem of junior Alexus Morgan and sophomore China Brown took an 8-3 loss at #1 doubles.

The Rams' struggles carried over into singles play, but the team would not make it easy for the Trojans. After a forfeit loss at #6 singles, the Rams also took 6-0, 6-0 losses at #4 and #5 singles to fall behind 5-0. The Rams also took a 6-1, 6-1 loss at #2 singles before a 6-4, 6-1 loss at ##3 singles. The team closed the day when Morgan took a 6-4, 6-2 loss at #1 singles.

With the loss, the Rams fall to 1-3 overall and 0-1 in CIAA play. The team would not have long to relax as the Rams returned to action later in the day to take on the defending CIAA champion Chowan Hawks later in the day.
