WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (3-6, 2-3 CIAA) got a key win, Tuesday when the team took a clutch 5-4 win over the Johnson C. Smith Golden Lady Golden Bulls (0-6, 0-3 CIAA). The Rams came up big for some clutch wins in singles play to pull out the victory.

The Rams opened the day with a pair of wins in doubles play to take the early lead in the match. The duo of senior Gabrielle Lindsay and junior Aja Grant took an 8-5 win at #1 doubles while the tandem of junior Alexus Morgan and sophomore China Brown combined for an 8-1 win at #2 doubles. The Rams took a loss at #3 doubles, but ended with the 2-1 lead.

With the 2-1 lead, the Rams needed some clutch play to claim the match victory. After taking early losses at #5 and #6 singles, the Rams needed some clutch play from the other singles. Morgan struck first with a 6-4, 6-0 win at #2 singles while Brown followed the effort with a 6-4, 6-3 win at #4 singles to put the Rams ahead 4-3. The match would soon tie after the Rams took a loss at #1 singles, but Grant would close the match when she took a 6-4, 2-6, 10-7 win at #3 singles to clinch the victory.

With the win, the Rams improve to 3-6 overall and 2-3 in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) play. More importantly, the team improves to 2-1 in CIAA Southern Division play. The team will return to action, Thursday when the team hosts the Livingstone Lady Blue Bears in another CIAA Southern Division match.
