BOWIE, MD – The Winston-Salem State Rams (11-10) gave a valiant effort, but the team did not have enough to overcome the top-seeded Chowan Hawks (20-8) in the semifinal round of the 2017 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Women's Tennis Championship Friday. The effort marked the second straight season that the Rams have reached the semifinal round of the championship tournament, but the team could not get past the top-seeded Hawks.
The Rams got the day started with three hard-fought doubles losses. The Rams took three doubles losses, but the team made their opponents work for them as junior Alexus Morgan and sophomore China Brown took an 8-1 loss at #2 doubles while senior Gabrielle Lindsay and junior Aja Grant took an 8-1 loss at #1 doubles to fall behind 0-3.
From there, the Rams looked to make a move in singles play, but the team could not pull through. The team took a pair of 6-0, 6-0 losses at #5 and #6 singles to end the day.
With the loss, the Rams end the 2017 season with an 11-10 record and their second straight appearance in the semifinal round of the CIAA Women's Tennis Championship Tournament.
