Rams drop three contests in CIAA North Round-UP

BOWIE, M.D. -The Winston-Salem State University volleyball team played a series of matches at the CIAA Round-ups last weekend inside the Leonidas S. James Physical Education Complex going 0-3 for the tournament.

In game one against Virginia Union, the Rams extended a five set match. After dominating the first two sets for a mirrored score 25-17, with five blocks in the second set alone. VUU won the next two sets to even out at 2-2. In the fifth set the Rams went on a 4-0 run to make a comeback to trail by two (12-10) until the Rams went on a final 3-0 run to win the set. Breonna Young led the team with 13 kills and a game high five blocks. Jericka Brodie totaled 16 digs while Angel Bowden finished with 15 assists.

In game two against Shaw University, the Rams lost the first two sets, before dominating the third set. WSSU embarked two 6-0 runs to bring a double-digit lead for a 25-12 win of the set. Shaw University reversed the score in the fourth set for a 25-12 victory. Sanaa Lanier led the team with seven kills and was second on the team with eight digs. Rheign Davis led all players with a whopping three blocks, and Myra Wallace led the game with 13 digs.

In game three against Bowie State, the Rams fought hard in a five set match while outnumbering Bowie in blocks for a team total of 13. With a 25-18 win of the first set, Bowie State snuck away with victories in sets two and three (25-21, 25-20) The Rams gained victory in a tight fourth set. After being tied up towards the end of the set, Lanier scored two straight kills to close the set for a 25-22 victory. In the fifth set, the Rams went on a 3-0 run to bridge a five point gap and trail by 1 (13-13). Bowie State ended up taking the set 15-12. Lanier led the teams with 11 kills. Davis led the team with three aces, while Young led all players with seven blocks. Wallace finished with 23 digs.

The Rams will travel to Charlotte, N.C. to face Johnson C. Smith who also went 0-3 in roundups on Thursday, September 29 at 6pm.
