WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Winston-Salem State University men's basketball team fell Saturday night against Shaw University 65-63 in the final five seconds inside C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium.
The Rams moved to 10-4 (2-3 CIAA), while the Bears improved to 8-7 (2-2 CIAA).
Jaylen Alston led the Rams finishing with 19 points, while
Jaylon Gibson added 12 points and six rebounds.
Samage Teel dished in 10 points along with three assists.
The Bears' opened the game on a 6-2 scoring run. The Rams came within three, 17-14 with 12:55 left to play in the half. WSSU trailed the majority of the half until a three from
Jaylen Alston with 2:45 to play gave the Rams a 32-31 lead over the Bears. Both teams went into halftime tied at 34-all.
The Rams started the second half on a 6-0 scoring run to take a 40-34 lead with 16:20 to play. With 12:13 remaining both teams were tied again at 46-all. The Rams trailed 60-56 with 4:45 left to play.
Samage Teel hit a lay-up with 1:10 left to play to give the Rams a 63-62 lead. In the last five seconds, the Bears scored a lay-up and got fouled. The made free throw gave Shaw the 65-63 victory.
WSSU is back in action on Monday, January 9th taking on Elizabeth City inside the R.L. Vaughn Center at 7:30 p.m.
