Women’s Basketball Drops Heartbreaker to Fayetteville State

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.- The Winston-Salem State University women's basketball team came up short to Fayetteville State University 48-47, inside C.E. Gaines Center Thursday night.
 
The Rams moved to (8-18, 2–14 CIAA).
 
Jakaiya Mack led the Rams with 12 points, followed by Kennedi Simmons with 11 points and Amaya Tucker chipped in with nine points. 
 
 Quick Inside the Numbers
The Rams went 17-of-45 from the field, 9-of-17 from the free-throw line, and 4-of-12 from three.  The Rams grabbed 34 rebounds, scored 16 points in the paint, 27 points off turnovers, and had 10 fast break points with 11 bench points. 
 
In the first quarter, the Broncos jumped out to a 4-0 lead with 7:55 left, and Alexandria Warren got the Rams on the board with a jumper making the score 4-2 with 6:58 remaining. Amaya Tucker cut the Broncos' lead to one point 7-6 on a jumper with 4:19 left. Kennedi Simmons gave the Rams their first lead of the game with a three-pointer making the score 11-9 with 1:55 remaining. The Broncos took a 13-11 lead into the second quarter.
 
In the second quarter, Amaya Tucker put the Rams back in front 15-13 on a lay-up with 9:40 left. Kennedi Simmons extended the Rams' lead to three points 19-16 on a jumper with 5:44 remaining in the half. The Broncos would close out the half on a 9-0 run, taking a 25-19 lead into halftime.
 
In the third quarter, with the Broncos up 27-19 with 9:29, Kennedi Simmons hit a three-pointer, scoring 27-22 with 6:35 left. Tolisha Walker put the Rams back in the lead on a lay-up 30-29 with 53 seconds but the Broncos took a 31-30 lead into the fourth quarter. In the fourth quarter, Amaya Tucker gave the Rams the lead on a three-pointer 33-31 with 9:14 left. With the score tied at 34-34, the Broncos went on a 9-0 run, making the score 43-34 with 5:12 remaining in the game. Taniah Wilkins ended the run with a lay-up 43-36 with 4:48 remaining. With the score 45-36 Broncos, the Rams went on a 9-0 run tying the game 45-45. The run was highlighted by a Kennedi Simmons three-pointer which made the score 45-43, then a Jakiaya Mack steal turned into a lay-up trying the game 45-45 with 2:12 remaining. The Broncos took the lead back on a lay-up 47-45 with 1:25 left. Chloe Willaims was fouled and she went to the free-throw line, where she connected on both free-throws, making the game 47-47 with 1:02 remaining. 
 
With five seconds left the Broncos were sent to the three-throw line, going 1-of-2 from the line making the score 48-47. After timeouts by the Rams and Broncos the Rams had the ball as Jakaiya Mack missed the game-winning three-pointer.
 
Up Next
The Rams will return to action on Thursday, February 22nd. The Lady Rams will travel to Raleigh, North Carolina, to take on Shaw University. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. inside C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium.
