Women’s Basketball Fall Short at St. Augustine’s

RALEIGH, N.C. -The Winston-Salem State University women's basketball team fell short to St. Augustine 56-50 Wednesday night. 
 
The Rams moved to (8-15, 2–11 CIAA).
 
Kennedi Simmons led the Rams with 13 points, followed by Tolisha Walker with nine points and seven rebounds. Amaya Tucker chipped in with eight points. 
 
Quick Inside the Numbers
The Rams went 19-of-48 from the field, 9 -of-16 from the free-throw line, and 3-of-10 from three.  The Rams grabbed 36 rebounds, scored 12 points off turnovers, and forced 22 turnovers; they scored 28 bench points. 
 
In the first quarter, Amaya Tucker got the Rams on the board with a jumper making it 2-2 with 8:50 left. Chloe Williams gave the Rams a one-point lead of 9-8 connecting on two free throws with 3:21 remaining. Amaya Tucker extended the lead to four points on a three-pointer 12-8 with 2:44 remaining. With the Falcons up 15-12, Tolisha Walker connected a jumper making the score 15-14 with 32 seconds left but the Falcons took a 15-14 lead into the second quarter. In the second quarter, down by four points, Taniah Wilkins hit a lay-up cutting the lead down to two points 18-16 with 7:58 remaining.  The Falcons extended their lead to nine points 29-20 with 55 seconds left. Amaya Tucker answered back with a jumper as she was fouled, and Tucker connected on the and-one making the score 29-23 Falcons with 40 seconds remaining. The Falcons took a 29-23 lead into halftime. 
 
In the second half, Sierra Hunter cut the Falcons' lead to five points 33-28 on a jumper with 8:41 remaining in the third quarter. The Falcons went on a 5-0 run extending their lead to 10 points 38-28 with 5:38 left. With the Falcons up 42-34, Chloe Williams cut the lead down to six points on a made lay-up 42-36 with 2:05 remaining. Kennedi Simmons then cut the lead to four points on a jumper 42-38 with 38 seconds left. The Falcons would take a 44-38 lead into the fourth quarter. In the fourth quarter, Tolisha Walker made the score 48-42 on a lay-up with 6:03 remaining. Kennedi Simmons hit a huge three-pointer making the score 48-42 with 5:25 left. The Falcons answered back with a three-pointer 51-45 with 5:09 remaining. Kennedi Simmons drilled another three-pointer cutting the lead back to three points, 51-48 with 4:51 remaining. Tolisha Walker cut the lead down to one point on a jumper 51-50 with 3:45 left but the Falcons ended the game.

The Rams will host Claflin University on Senior Day, Saturday, February 10th. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. inside the C.E. Gaines Center.
