Waleed Game-Winning Lay-Up Help Rams Complete Comeback Defeating Lees-McRae Monday

Banner Elk, N.C. -  The Winston-Salem State University women's basketball team completes comeback defeating Lees-McRae College 76-75, inside the Williams Gymnasium.  

The Rams improved (5-1, 0-0 CIAA) on the season. 

Maia Charles led the Rams with 15 points, followed by Breonna Roaf with 12 points and Makayla Waleed and Ah'Kiyah Pye with 11 points. 

Quick Inside the Numbers
The Rams went 30-of-65 from the field, 4-of-16 from three, 12-of-23 from the free-throw line. The Rams grabbed 37 rebounds, scored 46 points in the paint, 21 turnovers forced, 22 points off turnovers and 16 steals. 
 
 How It Happened
In the first quarter, the Bobcats took an early 7-2 on a jumper (8:18). A Jakaiya Mack three-pointer had the score 7-6 (7:29). The Bobcats went on 7-0 run, taking a 14-6 lead on a three-pointer (5:08). An Ah'Kiyah Pye lay-up cut the lead to 14-10. Lees-McRae went on a 7-0 run, growing their lead to 21-10 on a and-one (1:56). WSSU went on a 5-0 run, trimming the lead to 21-15 on an Alana Biosse lay-up (1:06). The Bobcats took a 23-19 lead into the second quarter. 

In the second quarter, Breonna Roaf made the score 23-21 on a jumper (9:51). The Bobcats went on a 13-2 run extending their lead to 36-23.
 
At the start of the 3rd, the Bobcats extended their lead — a quick 3-pointer by Sandra Mason put them up by 15 (48–33).
The Rams responded with a floater by Breonna Roaf on a fast break to cut the lead (48–35).
After a miss and a blocked shot by the Rams' Maia Charles, the Bobcats got two free throws from Kaylee Carson — pushing the lead back to 17 (50–33). The Rams fought back — a fast-break layup by Makayla Waleed narrowed the gap (50–37).
By the end of Q3, LMC led 59–46 after converting at the free-throw line in the last moments of the quarter.

WSSU opened the 4th strongly after a layup by Nevaeh Farmer, the Rams cut the lead to 59–55. The Bobcats answered with a 3-pointer by Sandra Mason to push it back to a 9-point margin (64–55). Then WSSU's Alana Biosse made two free throws to bring the Rams within 8 (66–58).
With under a minute left, LMC made a free throw (61–51), but WSSU stormed back: with another fast-break layup, followed by another basket to get within single digits again.
In the final 40 seconds, WSSU pulled ahead — a layup by Waleed gave them the 76-75 lead.


Up Next
The Rams will wrap up non-conference play by hosting Francis Marion University on December 11. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. inside the C.E. Gaines Center. All fans can bring a canned good for free entry.
