WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Three Rams from the Winston-Salem State University softball team earn Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Weekly Honors (CIAA) for week seven.
BreAnna Steele, a graduate student from Laurinburg, North Carolina was named the Pitcher of the Week, while
Layla Smith a freshman from Griffin, Georgia was named Defensive Player and
Makayla Vinson a freshman from Middlesex, North Carolina was named the Freshman of the Week.
Steele pitched a total of five innings this weekend versus Johnson C. Smith on April 5th. She gave up no hits, striking out a season-high eight batters, while not surrendering a homerun, giving up one earned run.
Defensively, Steele has posted a .1000 fielding percentage. Steele recorded 10 put-outs and two assists. Steele helped the Rams sweep Virginia Union and Johnson C. Smith.
Smith went 4-for-7 at the plate with three walks, scoring six runs, stealing six bases and not striking out. Smith's best game came against JCSU in Game 1 of the doubleheader, Smith went 2-for-3 at the plate, scoring two runs and stealing four bases on April 5th. Smith helped the Rams sweep Virginia Union and Johnson C. Smith.
Defensively, Smith posted a 1,000-fielding percentage this week. Layla recorded nine catches, two put-outs and seven assists.
Vinson, this past week was batting .339 and went 4-for-9 from the plate with three RBI's, scoring six runs, two walks, a stolen base white not striking out. Makayla's best game came on April 5th in Game 1 of a doubleheader against JCSU, Vinson went 2-for-3 at the plate, with a double, three RBI's, scoring two runs and stealing a base. Vinson helped the Rams sweep both Virginia Union and Johnson C. Smith this week.
Defensively, Vinson recorded seven catches and five assists.
The Offensive Player of the Week was Madison Heath from Fayetteville State.
The Rams will be back in action on Friday, April 11 hosting Livingstone College for a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 pm at Twin City Ballfields.
