WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Winston-Salem State University head men's basketball coach Bobby Collins and his coaching staff have wasted no time in making an immediate impact as the WSSU Office of Athletic Media Relations announced on Thursday that the Rams have signed Paul Davis of Marlboro County High School to a National Letter of Intent.
Davis, a 6'9", 195 pound center/forward from Bennettsville, SC is the first student-athlete to announce his intent to play for the Rams during the Bobby Collins era at WSSU. Davis, a rising senior at Marlboro County High School averaged 15 points, 10 rebounds, and three blocks per game last season while shooting 54% from the field and 74% from the free throw line as he helped to lead the Bulldogs to a 19-5 record and an appearance in the 4A Lowerstate Semifinals.
The son of Lonnie Davis, he is a member of the All-Area Hoop Zone Team and was an All-Region an All-State selection in 2005-06 as selected by the South Carolina Basketball Coaches Association and the South Carolina Sports Report.
Davis is also a member of the South Carolina Ravens, a Nike-sponsored AAU basketball program.
"Paul will eventually help to anchor the inside and give us the ability to score in the paint. At 6'9", he would immediately be the tallest player on this season's team. I have always been part of a team that has had an inside presence, and he will immediately being that to our program" head coach Bobby Collins said.
"I think this is a young man whose basketball future is ahead of him. Even though he has had tremendous success in high school, I think that his best basketball is yet to come. We will get him on a strength and conditioning program, and he will continue to improve. A very talented basketball player, we expect that he will excel both on the court and in the classroom."
