AKRON, OH - Despite leading midway through the second half of play, the Winston-Salem State University men's basketball team dropped a 79-67 decision to the University of Akron Zips at Rhodes Arena in Akron, Ohio on Saturday evening.
The Rams and Zips battled in the first half as the two teams were never able to establish complete control of the contest as the Zips would hold only a one-field goal lead at the halftime intermission, ahead 37-35.
The Rams tied the contest at 45-45 with just over 14 minutes to play as WSSU eventually took the lead in a contest that saw the l3ead change hands eight times.
The University of Akron, one of the MAC Conference's best team would eventually pull away in the late stages of the game as Cedrick Middleton proved to be too much for WSSU as he tallied a game-high 19 points to lead four Zips in double figures.
The Rams were led by Curtis Hines' season-high 20 points as he hit five of his seven three-point field goal attempts to lead all WSSU scorers. Darius Floyd tallied a career-high 18 points in the loss and Darrell Wonge scored in double-digits for the first time in six games as he recorded 14 points.
WSSU shot 46.4% from the field in the contest and a season-high 68.8% from behind the three-point arch as the Rams connected on 11 of their 16 three-point field goal attempts.
The loss drops the Rams to 1-12 on the season while the Zips improve to 6-1 with the win. The loss is Winston-Salem State University's ninth consecutive loss and marks the most consecutive losses by a WSSU men's basketball team since a 15-game streak that came during the 1991-92 season. The win moves the Zips' win streak to six consecutive games.
Winston-Salem State University returns to action on December 16, 2006 when they travel to Washington, DC to face the nationally-ranked Hoyas of Georgetown University at McDonough Arena.
