Rams Down Columbia Union Pioneers 77-61 On Senior Night

Feb. 10, 2007

Final Stats

WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Senior forward Norman Carter's career-high 14 points and 10 rebounds propelled the Winston-Salem State University Rams basketball team to a 77-61 victory over the Columbia Union College Pioneers on "Senior Night" at the C.E. Gaines Center in Winston-Salem, NC on Saturday evening.

Playing in the final home game of their WSSU basketball careers, Carter, Curtis Hines and Lowen Wray started the contest in front of a sell-out crowd at the C.E. Gaines Center as the Rams snapped their two-game losing streak.

Taking full advantage of his eighth career start in his 55th game as a Ram, Carter recorded career highs in both points and rebounds as he was a force on both the offensive and defensive ends of the floor.

"He just really came to play.  We went through him on both ends of the floor.  He played well on offense and on defense.  I mean, we even had to put him on their point guard to stop him from penetrating.  I can't be more proud.  Norman, a senior, had a really great night in his home gym in front of a home crowd for the last time in his career.  I'm really happy for him, and happy to get the win" head coach Bobby Collins said in post game interviews.

Despite trailing at the half, the Rams were able to bounce back during the game's final 20 minutes of play as the Rams won their first game of 2006-07 when trailing at the half (one win, 18 losses).

WSSU was paced by a trio of players who recorded 14 points each in the contest as Brian Fisher, Norman Carter, and Darius Floyd each tallied 14 points in the win.  Carter led the Rams with his career-high 10 rebounds en route to the first double-double of his WSSU career.

The Pioneers were led by Marice Stallion who tallied 14 points in the loss as he led four Columbia Union players in double-figures.

With the win, the Rams improve to 5-21 overall while the Pioneers fall to 4-17.

Winston-Salem State returns to action on Monday, February 12, 2007 at 7:30 pm as they travel to Normal, AL to face the Bulldogs of Alabama A&M.
