WINSTON-SALEM, NC -- Winston-Salem State's Sloane Holmes and Bianka Locklear took singles wins, and the Rams dominated doubles play as the lady Rams took care of business by defeating the MEAC 's Norfolk State 6-3 on Saturday.
Sloane Holmes got the Lady Rams off to a fast start with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Laura Gutierrez, while Bianka Locklear also won her match, in a thrilling three set victory, 4-6, 6-2, 13-11. Chelsea Chatman won by default in her singles match.
In double competition, the #1 team of Sloane Holmes and Kayla Carter handled Norfolk State's Rebecca Graff and Naeemah Brooks, 9-8 (7-5), while the Lady Rams' Bianka Locklear and Kalin Jarvis defeated NSU's Laura Gutierrez and Maryna Kariuk, 8-3. Chelsea Chatman and Taylor Harris won by default.
"I saw some improvement on the doubles side with Sloane and Kayla (#1 Doubles) coming from 7-2 down to winning," says john Martin WSSU head coach. "The first 9 games aren't how I want to see them play, but from there on out they played the way the coaching staff has wanted them to play. There was a strong singles effort to win the match," added Martin.
"We lost a 3rd set tiebreak, but also won one as well. Like the men, the purpose is to be tested early on so that we can repeat as Conference Champions, and advance to the NCAA tournament again," says Martin.
The Lady Rams will face the Elon Pheonix on February 25th in Elon, NC.
