Box Score 2 WINSTON-SALEM, NC – Winston-Salem State split a baseball double header with the Indiana (Pa) Crimson Hawks today at BB&T Ballpark, with the Rams dropping the first game 3-1, and coming back with a dominating 17-7 win in game two.
Game #1
Indiana (Pa) jumped out on the Rams early, when in the first inning after a walk, the Crimson Hawks' Ryan Uhl sent a pitch over the left field wall to give IUP a 2-0 lead.
The Rams were held at bay until the fifth inning, when
Alex Grubb doubled to start the inning and
Colby Keene was walked. After a fly out, where Grubb advanced to third, he was brought home on a
Gavin Culler single to left field, cutting the IUP lead to 2-1.
But the Crimson Hawks would answer back in the sixth inning, as they would pick up one run on a WSSU error, to push their lead to 3-1.
Winston-Salem State would have their chances in the six and seventh innings, as they would load the bases, but could not come up with a hit to bring in a run, and Indiana (Pa) would hold off the Rams for the final score of 3-1.
WSSU was led at the plate by Alex Grubb who was two for four with a run scored, Gavin Culler, Des Roberts, Dylan Dombrowskas, Connor Andrus and Taylor Idol all went one for four. Gavin Culler also had the Rams only run batted in.
Sam Burton took the loss for the Rams, going 5.2 innings, allowing three run (two earned), one hit, five strikeouts and four walks. Jordan Cummings came out of the bullpen to throw 3.1 innings, walking two and striking out one.
The loss dropped the WSSU Rams to 4-2, while Indiana (Pa) improves to 1-0.
Game #2
Indiana (Pa) scored first, as they were able to plate a run in the second inning, off of two hits and a WSSU error to take a 1-0 lead.
Winston-Salem State would answer in the third, as they would come up with two runs on two hits with help of an IUP error, to go ahead, 2-1. Colby Keene would reach on an error, and eventually score on a wild pitch. Connor Andrus would double to left field, scoring Gavin Culler.
IUP would battle back with three more runs in the fourth inning, coming off of three hits, to surge back in front, 4-2.
WSSU would put some room between them and IUP with a big bottom half of the fourth inning. Phillip Page singled, followed by an Alex Grubb double and a Colby Keene walk. Taylor idol would bring in two with a single. Colby Keene would score on a wild pitch and Dylan Dombrowskas would bring home a run on a sacrifice fly. Des Roberts would pick up an rbi with a single to right field.
The Rams would blow it open in the fifth when they would plate six runs on three hits and an error. Phillip Page would score on a wild pitch and Taylor Idol would pick up a run batted in on a single to left field, scoring Alex Grubb. The big blow would come off the bat of Dylan Dombrowskas, who would hit a grand slam home run to deep left field, to give WSSU a commanding 13-4 advantage.
Indiana (Pa) would not go away easily, and would come back in the sixth inning with three runs off of one hit and a WSSU error to make the score 13-7.
WSSU would slam the door closed in the bottom half of the sixth as they picked up four more runs on three hits. Michael McNamara would pick up a rbi, and a Jacob Barber double to left cnter would score two to give the Rams a 17-7 win.
Aaron Hatch picked up the win for WSSU, allowing four runs off six hits, while walking four and striking out five. Eric Corlett had another strong outing out of the bullpen, going 1.2 innings, walking one and striking out one. Austin Cole pitched the final two innings, allowing three runs on two hits, with three walks and two strikeouts.
At the plate, Taylor Idol went three for four with three rbi's and three runs scored, while Dylan Dombrowskas had the big day with five runs batted in, going one for two with a run scored and a grand slam. Connor Andrus went two for four with a rbi, and Phillip Page went two for four with two runs scored. Gavin Culler went one for two with four runs scored and three walks, while Alex Grubb finished one for three with two runs scored. Michael McNamara went one for one with a run scored and a rbi, and Colby Keene scored three runs.
With the win, the WSSU Rams improve to to 5-2, while Indiana (Pa) falls to 1-1.
The two teams will face each other gain in a double header, Saturday, starting at 10:00am at BB&T Ballpark in downtown Winston-Salem, NC.
