Lady Rams Battle, But Fall Short in 6-3 Loss vs. Johnson C. Smith

WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (1-4, 1-4 CIAA) gave it their all, but the team could not get past the Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls (3-8, 2-3 CIAA), Tuesday evening. The Lady Rams put up a great fight in the four and a half hour long match, but in the end the young team could not get the points they needed in the loss.

The Lady Rams got things started with some strong play in doubles, but fell short in two of the three matches. The duo of sophomore Gabrielle Lindsay and sophomore Deja Stewart took an 8-8 (10-4) tiebreak win at #1 doubles, but the Lady Rams took losses at #2 (8-4) and #3 (8-4) doubles.

In singles play, the Lady Rams were able to take a pair of wins as senior Devan Corpening took a 6-3, 6-4 win at #1 singles while freshman Aja Grant took a 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 win at #4 singles. Unfortunately, the two points were all that the Lady Rams could muster as they finished the day with the 6-3 loss.

With the loss, the Lady Rams fall to 1-4 overall and 1-4 in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) play. The team also falls to 1-2 in the CIAA Southern Division. The Lady Rams won't have long to recover as the team will return to action, Thursday when they host the Livingstone Blue Bears at home.
