WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The WSSU Baseball completed the four game weekend sweep of The Lincoln University Lions on Sunday by winning a double header, 5-0 and 14-1 at BB&T Ballpark in downtown Winston-Salem, NC.
With the two Sunday wins, WSSU improves its record to 22-6 overall and 7-1 in the CIAA, while the Lincoln University falls to 1-10 overall and 0-4 in the CIAA.
In game one, WSSU scored three runs in the second and two in the fifth to blank the Lions of the Lincoln, 5-0 in the first game of Sunday's double header.
Phillip Page led the Rams in hitting, finishing the game going two for three with two runs batted in, while Des Roberts went two for three with one run batted in. Nathan Steger went one for two with a run scored and a run driven in, while Jacob Barber finished one for three with two runs scored. Gavin Culler went one for three and Alex Grubb went one for one with a run scored. Colby Keene also scored a run in the game.
Jordan Carlton picked up the win for the Rams, striking out six and walking one and not allowing a hit, while Dylan Forbes picked up the save, giving up one hit and striking out one in his first action of the season.
In game two, the WSSU scored early and often as they dispatched the Lions 14-1 in the final game of the series.
Phillip Page continued to swing a hot bat, as he finished the game two for three with two runs scored and five runs batted in. The big blow came in the third inning when he blasted a grand slam home run to deep left field. Des Roberts and Dylan Dombrowskas each went two for four with a run scored and three runs batted in. Michael McNamara finished two for two with three runs scored and Alex Grubb was two for four with two runs scored and a rbi. Jacob Barber went two for three with three runs scored, and Colby Keene was one for four with a run batted in. Nathan Steger went one for four with a run scored and Gavin Culler finished with one run batted in and one run scored.
Aaron hatch picked up the win, allowing three hits, one run and one walk with seven strikeouts. Tyler Scearce pitched an inning in relief, giving up one hit, one walk and striking out two, and Hayden O'Neal pitched one hitless, scoreless inning.
"Solid pitching was the key for us all weekend", said Kevin Ritsche, WSSU head coach. "Our bullpen got extended outings and our depth guys pitched well", added Ritsche.
"Certain guys were seeing the ball well, this weekend, (Colby) Keene and (Alex) Grubb on Saturday and (Des) Roberts and (Phillip) Page today. It was a good all around team effort", said Ritsche.
Winston-Salem State will host Lenoir Rhyne on Tuesday and Catawba on Wednesday at BB&T Ballpark, with both games first pitch scheduled for 6:00pm.
