Box Score CHARLOTTE, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (17-12, 12-3 CIAA) volleyball team got back to their winning ways, Monday evening when the team took a three-set road victory over the Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls (5-15, 4-11 CIAA). The Rams took the win behind an overpowering offensive effort as the team clicked on all cylinders in the 25-10, 25-9, and 25-13 victory.
The Rams claimed the victory behind one of their best efforts of the season. Offensively, the Rams totaled 44 kills in just three sets while defensively, the team held the Golden Bulls to just 11 kills and 32 total points. WSSU senior middle blocker Jocelyn Mills led the way for the Rams with 13 kills in the match while junior outside hitter Sydney Holland added 11 kills.
The Rams got things started in big way when the team rolled do its 25-10 opening set victory. The Rams wasted little time getting started when the team opened the match with an 8-1 run that included three Mills kills. After holding a 13-6 lead, the Rams turned up their efforts with five unanswered points to go ahead, 18-6. The Rams allowed back to back JCSU points just once in the set when a WSSU service error was followed by a Golden Bulls kill and left the scored, 22-10 before the Rams scored three straight points with a Holland kill, followed by a kill from sophomore middle blocker Christa Brown and a JCSU hitting error that sealed the 25-10 opening set victory for the Rams.
The second set was the most dominating for the Rams as the team exploded for the 25-9 victory. Things started off slowly, but soon picked up for the Rams as the team cruised to the win. After opening the set by allowing back-to-back service aces to Johnson C. Smith, the Rams answered in a big way, going on a 7-1 run that included three Holland kills. The Rams had to fend off the Golden Bulls, who mounted a three-point run and cut the WSSU lead down to just one point, 8-7. However, the Rams had another big run left as the team mounted a 14-2 run that sealed the 25-9 second set victory.
The Rams continued their domination in the third set. The team opened the set on a high note with six unanswered points to open the set with a 6-0 win. Later in the set the Rams allowed three straight points to the Golden Bulls to cut the WSSU lead down to five points, 10-5, but the Rams once again answered in a big way. After holding a 16-11 win, the Rams closed things out with a 9-2 run that included a pair of kills from Holland, Smith, and Brown each.
With the win, the Rams improve to 17-12 overall and more importantly, 12-3 in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) play. The Rams will return to action tomorrow evening when the team hosts the Catawba Indians in a Senior Night match up.
