Box Score WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (3-6) dominated for an 80-45 win over the Voorhees Lady Tigers (4-7), Sunday afternoon. The Rams took the win behind their best effort of the season with the tem notching both offensive and defensive season highs in the win.
The Rams combined an overpowering offensive effort with a stifling defensive effort to claim their second straight home victory. As a team, the Rams scored a season-high 80 points in the win and shot a season-high 55.6% (35-of-63) in the win while holding Voorhees to shooting just 24.2% (15-of-62) from the floor and just 45 points, the lowest total for WSSU opponents this season. WSSU sophomore guard Brionna Pate led the scoring for the Rams with 13 points. Senior center Taylor Boyd added 12 points off the bench while junior center Kandace Tate added 11 points. Senior forward Trei Torain led the rebounding effort for the Rams with 10 rebounds in the game.
The Rams opened the game with their most dominating quarter of the season. The team outscored the Lady Tigers a stunning 24-2 and held their opponents without a field goal for the entire opening period. After jumping out to a 19-0 start, a pair of free throws were all that the Rams allowed in the first quarter of the game.
The WSSU domination continued into the second quarter, but the Rams had to deal with an aggressive Voorhees team that outscored WSSU 20-15 during the quarter. After going ahead by as many as 23 points, 30-7 5:42 left in the quarter, the Rams had to fend off a strong effort by Voorhees who cut the WSSU lead down to just 14 points, 36-22 with 1:29 left to play in the half. However, junior guard Tiana Edwards added a three-pointer with 00:32 left and kept the Rams on top, 39-22 at halftime.
After halftime, the Rams broke away to reclaim control of the game with a 20-9 effort in the third quarter. After a Voorhees three-pointer at the 9:48 mark to open the quarter and left Rams on top 40-25, the Rams scored nine straight points as a part of a 17-5 run that left the team on top, 57-30 with 2:12 left in the quarter. A jumper from senior forward Jasmine Carter capped the WSSU scoring and left the team on top 59-31.
The team kept the pressure going in the fourth quarter to cruise to the victory. WSSU opened the quarter with an 11-2 run and pushed their lead to 27 points, 70-33 with 6:00 left to play. The Rams went ahead by as many as 36 points, 76-40 following a Tate lay-up with 3:13 left to play. After a pair of free throws from freshman guard Aja Stevens left the Rams on top, 80-43 with 00:26 left to play, The Rams allowed one more basket to finish the game, 80-45.
With the win, the Rams improve to 3-6 overall and take back-to-back victories for the first time this season. The Rams will return to action, Sunday when they head to Concord, West Virginia to take on the Concord Mountain Lions.
