WINSTON-SALEM, NC – WSSU scored first inning runs on an Emilio Abreu double to left field, while Brandon Ford and Matt Mauldin added a three run home run in the sixth, to lift the Winston-Salem State Rams to a 8-3 over Benedict in Columbia, S.C. With the win, Winston-Salem State improves to 5-10 overall, while Benedict falls to 2-1 on the 2017 season.
After falling behind to WSSU early, the Benedict Tigers answered with runs in the second, third and sixth innings to make it a contest. Brandon Ford kept the pressure on the Tigers with a home run in eighth inning, and john Garcia added another home run in the ninth inning to propel the Rams to the out-of-conference win.
Matt Mauldin went 1 for 3 with two runs scored and three runs batted in, and a home run and Brandon Ford went 2 for 3 with a run batted in, two runs scored and a home run.
Randal Ortiz went 1 for 4 with a run scored, Emilio Abreu went 1 for 5 with two runs batted in and John Garcia went 1 for 4 with a run batted in, a run scored and a home run. Willie McRae went 1 for 4.
Winston-Salem State will host the Indiana University of Pennsylvania Crimson Hawks in a four game weekend series at BB&T Ballpark in downtown Winston-Salem this weekend.
