Rams Hot Bats, Solid Pitching and Home Runs Pace WSSU In Sweep

WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State University Rams continued to swing hot bats and hit the long ball as the Rams swept two games from Virginia State, at Finch Field in Thomasville, NC.

With the wins, Winston-Salem State improves to 20-12 overall, 10-0 in the CIAA, while Virginia State falls to 12-18 overall and 1-8 in the CIAA.

In the first game, WSSU jump on the Trojans early, scoring five first-inning runs. After being hit by a pitch, Randy Norris immediately stole second base. Brandon Ford singled, scoring Norris. Emilio Abreu reached on a fielder's choice, and Ivan Acuna singled. Landon Steiner singled to center, scoring Abreu. Randal Ortiz then hit his third home run of the weekend, scoring three runs.

VSU got right back into the game with a four run second, sparked by a three run double from David Markins.

In the third, Landon Stiner hit a mammoth home run scoring two runs, and Randy Norris singled to center field, scoring Matt Mauldin and Michael McNamara, and Brandon Ford singled to right, scoring Willie McRae and Randy Norris, to punch the Rams to an 11-4 lead.

Virginia State answered with one run in the top of the fifth, but WSSU answered that with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Ivan Acuna hit a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Randy Norris and Landon Steiner doubled to right, scoring Brandon Ford, to give the Rams the final score of 13-5.

Landon Steiner paced the way for WSSU, going three for four with two runs scored and four runs batted in. Brandon Ford was two for three with a run scored and three runs batted in, while Randy Norris also went two for three with three runs scored and two runs batted in. Randal Ortiz was one for four with three runs batted in and a run scored. Ivan Acuna finished two for three with two runs scored and a run batted in. Willie McCrae went 2 for 4 with a run scored and Matt Mauldin went one for three with a run scored. Michael McNamara scored a run. Landon Steiner and Randal Ortiz had home runs and Steiner, Randy Norris and Ivan Acuna had doubles.

Landon Biggs picked up the win, allowing two hits and four runs. Corbin Easter, Garrison Roy and James Martin also saw action out of the bullpen.

In game two, the WSSU Rams put the game away early, as they would score six first inning runs. The first three batters all reached base, and Ivan Acuna singled, scoring Norris. Brandon Ford would score on a wild pitch. John Garcia reached on an error form the left fielder, allowing Abreu and Acuna to score. And finally, Willie McRae tripled, scoring Garcia and McNamara.

The final scoring of this game came in the bottom of the second inning, when Brandon Ford led off the inning with a solo home run to left.

Willie McRae finished 1 for 2 with two runs batted in, and John Garcia went 0 for 3 with a run scored and two runs batted in. Brandon ford went 1 for 3 with two runs scored and a run batted in and Ivan Acuna went 1 for 3 with a run batted in and a run scored. Randy Norris finished 1 for 3 with a run scored and Michael McNamara scored a run. Brandon Ford hit a home run, and Willie McRae had a triple.

Will Beeson picked up the win for WSSU, striking out eight on the afternoon. Marcus McKoy and Landon Steiner also saw action on the mound.
