Rams Hold Off Shaw Lady Bears for 6-4 Road Win

RALEIGH, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (8-24, 6-7 CIAA) got a much needed win when the team took a 6-4 road victory over the Shaw Lady Bears (10-17, 8-7 CIAA), Sunday afternoon. The win ends a three-game skid by the Rams and gave the team a key Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) victory.

The Rams combined some quality defense with some timely offense to claim the victory. As a team, the Rams totaled 12 hits in the game. WSSU sophomore Erica Davis led the way for the team with a two-for-three batting effort with three RBI and a run scored. Junior left fielder Jasmine Holloman added a two-for-four batting effort with an RBI. Senior second base Tiarra Delaney and junior catcher Kortney Thomas both went two-for-four with a run scored each.

The scoring came early and often for the Rams. The team got things started with a pair of first inning runs. Holloman got things started with an RBI double to score freshman outfielder Nyla Howard. Freshman designated player Alexis Washenko added an RBI groundout to score Davis as well. After allowing a first inning run to the Lady Bears, the Rams added a second inning run when Davis hit a two-RBI single to score junior Daijah Chambers and Thomas. The effort left the Rams with a 4-2 lead. Davis added to the Rams' lead when she drew an RBI on a Shaw fielding error to score junior Destiny Snipes. After allowing a pair of fourth inning runs to the Lady Bears, the Rams stood with a 5-4 lead. The team added a seventh-inning run when Thomas hit an RBI double to score Delaney.

Freshman Tia Robinon (2-9) took the pitching win. She threw all seven innings, allowing four runs (four earned) on eight hits with six strikeouts.

With the win, the Rams improve to 8-24 and 6-7 in CIAA play. The team also improves to 3-4 in CIAA Southern Division play. The two teams would go on to complete the doubleheader later in the day.
