Box Score MOUNT OLIVE, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (1-5) played well, but the team fell victim to a seventh-inning rally in a 6-3 loss to the Mount Olive Trojans (4-2), Sunday afternoon. The Rams carried a 3-1 lead into the seventh inning, but the team allowed five runs in the inning, including allowing a three-run walk-off home run that ended the game.
The Rams took the loss in spite of a solid overall effort in the game. As a team, the Rams had five hits in the game, including a pair of extra-base hits. Sophomore right field Aniyah Jones led the way for the team with a two-for-three batting performance with a home run, a run scored, and two RBI. Junior centerfielder Alleshia Pullen added a two-for-three performance of her own.
In spite of the loss, the game featured some strong play by the Rams. After allowing an opening inning run to the Trojans, the Rams held their opponents scoreless until the seventh inning. The Rams tied the game in the fifth inning when Jones hit a solo home run. The Rams took the lead in the sixth inning when junior second base Tia Robinson hit an RBI double that put the Rams ahead, 2-1. Jones added her second RBI of the game when she hit a single that scored Robinson. The effort gave the Rams a 3-1 lead heading into the seventh inning. In the inning, the Rams allowed the Trojans to tie the game, 3-3 after a two-RBI single before allowing a walk-off three-run homer that ended the game.
WSSU freshman pitcher Anastasia Morrison (1-2) took the pitching loss. She started the game and threw 6.2 innings. She finished the game with six runs allowed (six earned) on eight hits. She recorded a pair of strikeouts.
With the loss, the Rams fall to 1-5. The team will return home for their next action when the team hosts the Salem (W.Va.) University Tigers on Saturday, February 15th.
