Box Score Fayetteville State overcame a six-point WSSU lead early in the second half and went on to defeat the Rams 66-54 in a one-day weather-delayed men's game on Sunday at Capel Arena. The game was played before with no fans because of FSU Covid protocols. The loss ended WSSU's win streak at five games. The Rams, 11-5 overall, dropped to 4-3 in CIAA play while the Broncos improved to 10-6 and 5-1. Both teams are 2-1 in the Southern Division standings.
Javonte Cooke led the Rams with 14 points and eight rebounds. Samage Teel scored eight points and contributed four assists.
The Broncos went up by 10-points with 6:30 to play in the first half. 'SU methodically whittled away its double-digit deficit and entered halftime with a three-point lead. Isaac Parson started the rally, connecting on a three-point shot with 6:04 remaining. Cooke's three-pointer with 4:42 before halftime sliced the deficit to four points.
FSU went up by five, but another Parson three-pointer cut the lead to one. Cameron Campbell's three-pointer with 49 seconds on the clock provided 'SU with a 30-27 halftime lead.
The Broncos went ahead 34-33 with 16:04 to play in the game, and the Rams would never lead again. FSU led by 10 points with 8:29 to play. Cooke hit a layup and three-pointer to slice the Rams deficit to five with 6:58 remaining. It was the closest the Rams would come as they made only one field goal in the next five minutes.
'SU hit 7-13 three-point shots for 41.2%. The Rams were 20-65 for 30.8% from the floor. FSU shot 40% from the floor (25-62) and three-point line (10-25).
WSSU travels to Johnson C. Smith for another big Southern Division matchup on Wednesday night. It will be the third road game of the season the Rams have played a CIAA game with no fans in attendance due to Covid protocols.
