HARLEM, N.Y. – The Winston-Salem State University men's basketball team traveled to Harlem, New York to play in the Harlem Renaissance Classic, defeating Jefferson University 76-43 Saturday afternoon.
The Rams moved to 3-1 on the season after shooting 57% and were 40-18 in rebounding to win in the Classic.
Samage Teel scored 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting and also had three assists and two steals.
Isaac Parson added 14 points and five rebounds. Also scoring in double figures was
Jonathan Hicklin with 11 points on 5-of-7 shooting.
How it Happened
- The Rams opened the first half with a 5-0 scoring run. TJU took a 6-5 lead with 17:02 remaining in the first half.
- WSSU took a 16-15 lead after Nathan Springs hit a three with 11:20 remaining in the half. The WSSU Rams lead 21-15 with 9:18 to play in the first half.
- Isaac Parson hit a three to give the Rams a 24-15 lead with 8:05 left in the half. The Rams led 32-19 at the under-four-minute media mark.
- WSSU went into the half up 40-24.
- Samage Teel hit a three with 15:00 to play in the second half to give the Rams a 52-25 lead over Jefferson.
- The Rams continued their momentum and led 66-38 with 4:54 remaining in the game.
- Winston-Salem State University won 76-43.
A quick fun fact
- The Rams got to practice Friday afternoon at the Essex Community College on the Cleo Hill, Sr. court. It was a very proud and surreal moment for head coach Cleo Hill, Jr.
- WSSU presented Hall of Famer Earl "The Pearl" Monroe with a gold basketball and a jersey.
- Jaylen Alston was named MVP of game one of the Harlem Renaissance Classic after finishing with eight points, 13 rebounds, and two assists in his 32 minutes of action.
