#21 Lady Rams Pick up Tough Road Victory at Virginia Union Wednesday

Richmond, V.a. -  The Winston-Salem State University women's basketball team defeated Virginia Union University 55-47, inside the Barco Stevens Hall. 

The Rams improved to (18-2, 9-1 CIAA, 3-1 South) on the season.

Makayla Waleed led the Rams with 15 points, followed by Navaeh Farmer chipping in with 10 points. 

Quick Inside the Numbers

The Rams went 21-of-62 from the field, 5-of-22 from three, and 8-of-14 from the free-throw line. The Rams grabbed 46 rebounds, scored 20 second-chance points, forced 18 turnovers, scored 11 points off turnovers, and had 14 steals.  

 How It Happened

In the first quarter, the Panthers jumped out to a 6-0 lead on a lay-up (5:37). The Rams cut the lead to 8-4 on a Ah'Kiyah Pye lay-up (4:04). VUU went on a 6-0 run, extending their lead to 14-4 on two free-throws (2:40). WSSU closed out the quarter on a 8-2 run, giving the Panthers a 16-12 lead into the second quarter. 

In the second quarter, the Rams went on a 7-0 run, taking a 19-16 lead on a Jakaiya Mack and-one (6:18). VUU went on a 7-3 run, taking a 23-22 lead on two free-throws (021). TaNiya Simms gave the Rams a 24-23 lead going into halftime with a lay-up. 

In the third quarter, the Rams' went on a 9-0 run, taking a 33-23 lead on a Maia Charles lay-up (7:19). The Rams lead grew out to 40-25 on a Nevaeh Farmer lay-up (4:26). WSSU closed out the quarter on a 7-1 run, taking a 47-26 lead into the fourth quarter. 

In the fourth quarter, the Panthers went on a 14-2 run, cutting the lead to 49-40 on a and-one (2:18). A huge Navaeh Farmer three-pointer gave the Rams a 52-40 lead (2:00). The Rams held off the Panthers despite a 7-2 run at the end of the game.

The Lady Rams will return to action on February 7, hosting Fayetteville State University. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. inside the C.E. Gaines Center.
