Wonge's Career High 23 Points Leads WSSU To 88-76 Win Over Tigers

Jan. 21, 2006

Final Stats

WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Rams, behind Darrell Wonge's career-high 23 points, earned their fourth straight conference win on Saturday evening as they defeated the Saint Paul's College Tigers 88-76 in front of a standing-room only crowd at the C.E. Gaines Center in Winston-Salem, NC.

Each team converted on 13 field goals during the game's first 20 minutes of play as the Rams shot 54.2% from the field (13 of 24 overall) for their fifth consecutive half where they have hit more than half of their field goal attempts.

The Rams three more successful free throws and five three-point field goals (to the Tiger's trio of threes) earned the Rams a five-point lead heading into halftime as WSSU led 40-35.

WSSU increased their lead during the second half of play as the Rams pushed their cushion to a game-high 13 points with 7:52 remaining in the game on an Audly Wehner mid-range jumper as WSSU found themselves leading the Tigers 66-53.

Despite a late Saint Paul's College run that cut the lead to as little as five points, the Rams, behind their trademark staunch defensive system, held off the upstart Tigers en route to their season-high fourth consecutive victory.

The Rams were led by Wonge who tallied a career-high 23 points had five scorers in double figures as Frank Johnson and Corey Parker each contributed 15 points in the win.

The Tigers were led by Omar Shands' 17 points and 10 rebounds in a losing effort.

With the win, the Rams improve to 10-5 overall (5-2 CIAA, 2-0 CIAA West) while the Tigers fall to 6-8 overall (0-5 CIAA, 0-2 CIAA East) with the loss.

WSSU returns to action on Tuesday, January 24, 2006 as they travel to Petersburg, VA to face the Trojans of Virginia State University at 7:30 pm.
