RALEIGH, NC – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (9-9, 8-3 CIAA, 4-1 CIAA South) held on to pick up a clutch division win with a five-set road win at Saint Augustine's (7-13, 7-4 CIAA, 2-3 CIAA South), Friday evening. With the win, the Lady Rams move to 4-1 in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division.
The team needed some clutch play to score the win, 26-28, 25-15, 21-25, 25-19, and 15-13. The match was a see-saw battle with momentum swinging from court to court in all five sets of the match. After taking a tough 28-26 loss in the opening set of the match, the Lady Rams bounced back for a dominating 25-15 win in the second set. The team took another tough loss in the third set, falling 25-21, but bounced back for a 25-19 set. The Lady Rams went on to complete the win with a clutch 15-13 win in the fifth and final set of the match.
The Lady Rams took the win behind a strong overall effort with 54 total kills, 13.0 total team blocks, and 64 digs. The tandem of freshman middle blocker Lauren Aikens and junior hitter Francesca Edgerton led the way for the Lady Rams, combining for 21 total kills in the match. Edgerton totaled 11 kills while Aikens added 10 kills as well. WSSU senior setter Kiara Brown coordinated the effort for the Lady Rams with 39 assists.
