RALIEGH, N.C. – The Winston-Salem State University 2022 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Women's Outdoor Track and Field Team and the 2023 Men's Basketball CIAA Championship Team spent the day at the North Carolina General Assembly.
The teams received recognition from Senator Paul Lowe and Representative Amber Baker for their hard work and dedication to their perspective sports.
Each coach and student-athlete received certificates honoring them. The teams were also recognized during the NC House floor and the NC Senate floor.
The 2022 Outdoor track and field team was tied with Fayetteville State to be named Co-Champions.
The Rams were in first place after the day one events that took place on the campus of Bowie State. After all 16 events scored, the Rams and Broncos finished with a total of 149.5 points.
Winston-Salem saw first-place finishes from DeMaya Campbell (javelin), Kennedy Alexander (high jump), Alyssa Farmer (discus), Tamia McLean (400), and Vanessa Jones (3000).
A big second-half run helped No. 5 seed Winston-Salem State University reclaim control and defeat No. 6 seed Lincoln (Pa.) 62-57 for the CIAA Men's Title at CFG Bank Arena on Saturday, March 2, 2023.
The title is the 13th in the Rams' storied basketball history, including two under Head Coach Cleo Hill Jr. The win also earned the Rams (21-8 overall) an automatic bid to the NCAA Division II playoffs in the Atlantic Region.
The Rams finished the regular season 21-8, 10-7 (CIAA), including a 10-2 record at the C.E. Gaines Center.
