Mill Spring, NC - The Winston-Salem State University women's indoor track and field team finished in third place at the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) indoor track and field championships.
On day one of the CIAA Indoor track and field championships,
Layla Simpson took first place in the pentathlon with 3,152 points, while
Lanyjah Gunter won the long jump with a mark of 5.81m (19-00.75).
The DMR relay team comprised of
Ava Millner,
Leigh Wills,
Rainn Sheppard and
Elicia Bryant captured second place with a time of 13:04.5 and
Elicia Bryant also came in third place in the mile with a time of 5:17.85.
In the 400m,
Asheika Smith,
Leigh Wills and
Olivia Cosby all qualified for the finals.
Brianna Benloss and
Candace Morris qualified for the finals in the 60m.
Elicia Bryant,
Ava Millner,
Simone Kelly and
Rainn Sheppard all qualified for the 800m finals. Smith, Benloss, and Cosby also qualified for the finals in the 200m.
The Rams finished day one in second place with 46 points after four events scored. Fayetteville had 54 and Virginia State had 18 points.
On day two,
Layla Simpson began the day taking third place in the high jump with a mark of 1.58m (5-02.25).
Rainn Sheppard took third place in the 800m with a time of 2:17.69.
Elicia Bryant took fourth place (2:20.44).
Leila Henderson took second place in the shot put with a mark of 13.45m.
The 4x400m relay team made up of
Olivia Cosby,
Simone Kelly,
Leigh Wills and
Asheika Smith came in second place to end the night with a time of 3:48.79.
WSSU finished with 113 points, while Fayetteville State won with 133 points and Claflin came in second with 123.5 points.
The Rams will compete on Saturday, Feb. 21 at the ASICS Last Chane Meet in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
