Box Score WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (13-10) rallied late for a big 5-4, 10-inning win over the Shepherd Rams (9-8), Tuesday afternoon. The Lady Rams made some key plays late in regulation and in extra innings to pick up the big home win.
The game was a tough defensive battle with both teams giving it their all until the very end. Though the two teams combined for 16 hits, the hits were spread out over 10 innings of play with both starting pitchers throwing every pitch of the game. WSSU finished the game with nine total hits with three WSSU players notching two hits each in the game. Sophomore shortstop Tanaya Pettus led the way for the Lady Rams with a pair of hits and an RBI. Freshman Bria Jones made the key plays for the Lady Rams, scoring the tying run and hitting into the winning play as well.
The two teams battled to a 2-2 tie through the first seven innings of play. After allowing a second inning run to Shepherd, WSSU answered with a third inning run of their own when freshman outfielder Brittany Rich hit an RBI single that scored fellow freshman Mariha Freeman and tied the game 1-1. Both teams scored in the sixth inning when Jones scored on a Shepherd throwing error that tied the game at 2-2 and sent the game into extra innings. Both teams scored one run each in the eighth and ninth innings to force the 10th inning. After the WSSU defense stepped up to hold Shepherd scoreless in the 10th inning, the Lady Rams scored the winning run when Jones hit a fielder's choice that allowed Rich to reach third base and scored on a Shepherd throwing error.
WSSU sophomore pitcher Yasmin Lee took the pitching win, going all 10 innings. She finished the game with five strikeouts and just two earned runs allowed.
