Box Score WINSTON-SALEM, NC – Winston-Salem State University raced out to an early lead and converted free throws down the stretch, as they held on for a big out of conference win over Glenville State, 84-75 Monday night in the CE Gaines Center.
With the win, Winston-Salem State improves to 5-1 overall, while Glenville State falls to 4-2 on the season. The win was also a big regional win for the Rams, as WSSU came into the game ranked #7 in the Atlantic Region, while Glenville State came in ranked #4.
The Rams started the game hot and quickly jumped out to a 13-6 lead, but the Pioneers used their own 7-0 run to pull even at 13-13 with 11:46 in the first half.
The game would go back and forth between the two teams, before Winston-Salem State would use a 17-5 run to close out the first half and take a 44-32 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The second half began with WSSU maintaining their double digit lead but a 9-0 run by the Glenville St. Pioneers, cut the Rams lead to just two points, at 59-57 with just under nine minutes left to play.
But the Rams would settle themselves and right the ship, as WSSU got big contributions from CJ Ford, Marquez Jones, WyKevin Bazemore and Terrell Leach, down the stretch to push their lead back out to double digits in the final few minutes of the game.
Glenville State would cut the lead to eight points with 1:23 left, but two CJ Ford free throws, one free throw from Donta Harper and a layup by Terrell Leach with 21 seconds remaining, helped seal the win for the Rams at 84-75.
For the second game in a row, WSSU dominated points in the paint (42-18), while converting 19 Pioneer turnovers into 21 points. The Rams also outscored Glenville State's bench 26-14.
The Rams also debuted a new uniform, gray with red lettering and numbers with a red stripe and the Ram logo on the shorts.
Marquez Jones led the Rams with 22 points, to go with his four rebounds, three assists and two steals. WyKevin Bazemore had a huge night for the Rams, as he finished with 19 points, 15 rebounds, three assists, two steals and one blocked shot. Terrell Leach came off the bench to add 19 points and three steals. CJ Ford chipped in eight points, four rebounds, two assists and a steal and Donta Harper added seven points and four rebounds.
Glenville State was led by Brett Morris who finished with 18 points and eight rebounds, and Reggie Williams finished with 17 points, three rebounds and three assists. Luke Campbell added 15 points for the Pioneers.
WSSU will take a break until December 13th, when they will travel to Fairmont, WV to take on the Fighting Falcons of Fairmont State at 4:00 pm.
