WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (7-10) turned to their defense to claim a 3-1 win over the Mansfield Mounties (4-6), Sunday afternoon. The Rams made the best of some limited offense and some strong defense to claim their third victory at the Shaw University Softball Challenge.

As a team, the Rams totaled three runs on just six hits in the game. WSSU freshman shortstop Jasmine Holloman led the way with a two-for-three effort at the plate with a double and a run scored. Junior outfielder Idaysha Quionones added a one-for-three effort with two RBI while sophomore left fielder Katherine Zimmer added a triple.

The Rams took control of the game early when Quinones hit a two-RBI single that scored Holloman and junior second base Chyna Riley. After holding Mansfield to just a fifth-inning run, the Rams added an insurance run in the sixth inning when Zimmer hit an RBI triple that scored junior third base Rebecca Demko.

WSSU junior Mercedes Hargett (3-5) got the pitching win, going all seven innings and holding Mansfield to just one run (one earned). She also recorded a pair of strikeouts with no walks allowed.
