Rams Hit Three Home Runs in 15-5 Loss to Walsh

WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Winston-Salem State University Rams (5-9) showed some great power at times, but the team could not keep up in a 15-5 loss to the Walsh Cavaliers (8-3), Thursday afternoon. The Rams notched three home runs in the game, but the effort was not enough to keep up with the Cavaliers.

As a team, the Rams showed a strong offensive performance, but the team struggled against the powerful Walsh offense. WSSU totaled eight hits in the game, including five extra-base hits WSSU sophomore first base Aniyah Jones led the way for the Rams, going three-for-three at the plate with two home runs and four RBI. Sophomore Danielle Stradford added a home run of her own.

The game turned into a struggle early for the Rams. The team allowed five first inning runs to the Cavaliers before answering with a Jones solo home run in the bottom of the inning. Unfortunately, the Rams allowed four more unanswered runs in the second inning with one more in the third inning to fall behind, 10-1. Stradford gave the Rams a spark in the fourth inning she hit a solo home run to straight away centerfield who cut the WSSU deficit down to eight runs, 10-2. In the fifth inning, the Rams allowed five runs to the Cavaliers before their best offensive inning in the bottom of the fifth. The Rams scored three runs when Jones hit a three-run home run that cut the WSSU deficit down to 10 runs. Unfortunately, the Rams would get no closer and finished the game with the loss.

WSSU freshman Leah Thomas (0-2) started the game and took the pitching loss. She went 2.2 innings for the Rams and finished with nine runs allowed (nine earned) on six hits with a strikeout. Redshirt-freshman Anastasia Morrison came in for 2.1 innings and she finished the game with six runs allowed on three hits with a strikeout.

With the loss, the Rams fall to 5-9 on the season. The team will return to action, Saturday morning when they host the Kutztown Bears in an 11:00 a.m. doubleheader.
