The WSSU Wrestling Team won the CIAA Wrestling Tournament Championship in three consecutive seasons (1988, 1989, 1990). Key team accomplishments during this span include: Two-time overall team champions of the Mid-South Wrestling Tournament at Carson-Newman University, Tennessee (1989-1990); Delivering several individual place finishers/winners at the Pembroke State University Open Tournament each year; and Three individuals earning NCAA Division II All-American honors during this span (Donnell Rawls, James McLinnaham, Willie Mouzon).
Four wrestlers graduated from WSSU and became members of their respective U.S. Military Service's Wrestling Teams (U.S. Army - James McLinnaham, Robert Smith, Andrew Flagler | U.S. Navy - Marcus Myers), and several have coached and actively coach wrestling for their communities’ middle and high schools (Melton Hardee, James McLinnaham, James Hargrove, William Carter, Marcus Myers, Ocie Jackson, Corey Woody)
