In 1983, Haynes was an All-American DII Wrestler here at Winston- Salem Stte University. Haynes secured his legacy as a standout wrestler for the Rams and earned NCAA Division II All-American honors at 158 pounds in 1984, making him one of the early pioneers of the WSSU wrestling program.

• Team Success: He was an instrumental contributor to the WSSU wrestling "Red Machine" era, which dominated the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA).
