Calvert H. Smith, Ph.D. has had a distinguished professional career and he has been a tremendous support of WSSU athletics. He has earned several honors for his support of WSSU, including earning the WSSU Alumni Achievement Award from the School of Education and Human Performance. He also earned the WSSU Unsung Hero Award.

He has been recognized several times for his prestigious career as an educator. He was recognized as a State of Illinois Outstanding Black Educator and he was listed among the Who’s Who of Black Americans. He also earned the Golden Achievement Award for Outstanding Contributions to Education. He is a former member of the WSSU Board of Visitors and a former president of the Cincinnati branch of the NAACP.

As a player, Smith had an equally impressive playing career where he was a three-year letterman for the Rams baseball team. He was an all-conference catcher, a team captain, and he started every game during his collegiate career and played in all but two innings.
